Deli For Your Belly

Deli For Your Belly is at 325a Glebe Point Road; the sign outside says "Small goods – Cheeses – Cakes & yummy goods for all". That's a perfect description of an old-fashioned deli with a great range of fresh produce: ham on the bone, olives, cheeeses, breads, sweets, preserves, pastries, cakes and gold medal-winning pies, as well as dried and tinned delicacies. The owners are George and Nancy. George has big plans for outside seating in the quiet courtyard behind the shop and was clearly hugely enthusiastic about what he was selling: he showed me the huge rounds of burek (a Turkish pastry made with filo and filled with soft cheese or cheese and spinach), so popular that while I was there several people came in and asked for them. I had an excellent latte at a little table outside in the sunshine.

  1. George looks like a pretty happy chappy. I've always wanted to try Burek (you always see it at the Queen Vic Markets in Melbourne)...did you try it?

  2. No I didn't, I'd just stuffed myself at the Egg & Soldier. I'll be going back for some, though.
